BENA (M) – Seven-year-old in Philomath, Oregon
Bena, (pronounced Ben-ya), a beautiful seven-year-old, 11-lb. boy, is looking for someone to love him for who he is and help him become the amazing companion he was meant to be. He is the most devoted dog, ever, never leaving his foster mom’s side and always trying to please her. He will gaze lovingly into her eyes, which of course melts her heart every time. He is also a sweet little cuddlebug, craving snuggles and scritches. Whip smart, Bena easily learned how to sit, lay down, load up, stay and heel on his walks.

Bena is great on a leash during his walks but has a little glitch in his stride, caused by a previous injury. This does not stop him from getting plenty of exercise playing with his prized toys and his foster sister pup Molly. While a fenced yard would be great for him, it is not necessary. Having been previously pad trained, in foster, he quickly learned how to use the doggie door and is making great strides in being fully house trained.

Bena does well with the two other Bichons in his foster family and has not been tested with cats. His perfect home? We think he would do especially well with a female owner, a retired couple or someone who can be home with him most of the time. Bena is neutered, fully vetted and healthy.

But he doesn’t come without some challenges. Bena tends to nip at people he doesn’t know. Working with a behaviorist, his foster family trained him to go into his crate when the doorbell rings. He is making great progress! He has overcome his habit of constant barking when left alone but can still be vocal if he is by himself too long. His fosters will share with his new family everything they have learned about helping him so he can keep making great progress as he settles into his new home.

Bena will require someone experienced with fearful, insecure pups who is willing to continue working with him and, most importantly, to love him for who he is. He is not perfect, but he is wonderful in his own way, and would make someone a loyal, devoted companion. Will you open your heart to Bena, our pup with the gorgeous eyes and heart of gold?

TED (M) Eight-year-old in Potomac, Maryland.
Ted was turned into BFCACT when his family was no longer able to care for him. He is absolutely gorgeous and was used in breeding for several years. But now he is ready to bring all his classic Bichon good looks to a new welcoming family who will love him for his adventuresome spirit, happy and friendly personality, and devotion to his humans. He looks at you like you are the love of his life (because you are)! Sweet and gentle, he quickly warms up to anyone willing to give him some love. He will joyfully go from lap to lap. But his favorite place to be is next to you on a soft, comfy couch.

Our amazing foster mom tells us Ted quickly made himself comfortable in her home and has befriended all family members, including the resident pupper. Preferring to sleep in bed with mom, he is also happy to go into his crate at bedtime, as long as there is a soft blanket waiting for him. He does great on the leash – no pulling – and loves several nice long walks every day to help burn some of his abundant Bichon energy. Ted gets along with other dogs and would do fine in a home with another dog of his energy level and size (about 20 pounds). He is now neutered, vaccinated, and recently passed his vet checkup with flying colors. And did we mention that he is fully housetrained? Yes, it is true!

If you are looking for an adult Bichon who has clearly been loved and well cared for, Ted is the boy for you. Ted would do well with any adult family or with children old enough to treat him gently and respect his boundaries. He would also enjoy a fenced-in back yard where he could soak up the sun, run and play to his heart’s content and watch, and maybe even chase, squirrels and other critters who happen by. Because he is so attached to his family, it would be great if someone were home much of the time, but he does fine alone during the day if necessary.

Gizmo (M) - 10 year old being fostered in Sanford, FL
Gizmo is an absolutely beautiful 19-lb. Bichon mix who was turned in with two other pups. All three were flea-infested and grossly dirty and matted. Although he was neglected in the past, he doesn’t hold a grudge, and turned out to be a sweet, affectionate and loving companion. His foster mom tells us he is doing great on his house breaking. While his sight is severely limited by cataracts, our boy gets along well in an environment familiar to him. He is being fostered with a number of other pups, who he does fine with. Gizmo is neutered and has been fully vetted.
Gizmo needs you. While he is a bit older and his eyes are clouded by cataracts, he has so much life to live and love to give. Yes, because of his vision loss, he can’t safely do stairs and his person needs to be sure the house is safe for him. But what a gift you would be giving to him – and to yourself – to grant this special boy the chance to live as part of a loving family. His gratitude would know no bounds and you would be comforted knowing that you made a difference in the life of such a worthy little pup.

Fluffy (F) – Ten or eleven year old in Owings Mill, MD (northern suburb of Baltimore)
For those of you looking for an amazing girl with her puppy years in the rearview mirror, we may have found her for you! Fluffy loves to run in the yard, take her walks and go for car rides. In fact, she will do a little dance and give a big smile when she realizes her foster mom is getting ready to go out. While Fluffy occasionally plays with the foster mom’s Maltese, she prefers to be on her own, finding just the right stuffie to shake and chase after. As a take-charge kind of gal, she is good with other dogs who respect her space and let her be the leader. At night, she is happy chilling out near her foster mom to help her watch TV.
Our girl weighs about 13 pounds, was previously spayed, recently had dental surgery and is fully vetted. Perfectly house trained, when she needs to go outside, Fluffy will give cute little growls and look eagerly into your eyes. She doesn’t hear well, maybe due to past ear infections. She has learned her foster’s hand signals and will comply if the spirit moves her (she can be a tad bit stubborn). Fluffy may have some vision problems and arthritis, as she is hesitant to use the stairs, but moves great after the first step. Like many Bichons, Fluffy has separation anxiety and will require a family that is home most of the time. She has not been tested with cats or children. We believe she would be fine with young people over the age of 12 who treat her kindly and respect her boundaries.
With her delightful personality and devotion to her person, Fluffy would be a joy for anyone looking for a gentle, loving companion.

Henry (M) – Three year old in Newell, South Dakota (west part of state near Wyoming and Montana borders)
Well, look who’s here! It is Henry, our 11 lbs. of love and adventure living life large on a beautiful ranch in South Dakota. While we are not 100% sure what his heritage may be, we do know he is an adorable, active and curious boy. He adores running through fields with his foster mom and barking at horses nearby, playing with other dogs, jumping, and exploring the world around him. As playful as a puppy, he quickly learned how to play fetch with his favorite ball and doesn’t mind if you throw it over and over (and over) again! But he has a quiet, relaxed side and is more than happy to be the calm, friendly dog in a remote office and to cuddle with you on the sofa at night. He is getting used to the cats in his foster mom’s home – one he tolerates and the other one – not so much. While Henry is definitely an indoor dog, he would love to burn off his boundless energy in a fenced-in yard. He has recently been vetted and neutered. Foster mom has him in a belly band until she confirms his housetraining skills. While he is a bit thin, he has been gaining weight. In the meantime, he is one cute little dude in his sweaters! He loves adults and children and would do best where they are home a lot. He is looking for someone who would have the time to show him what it means to be a pampered and cherished pup. This special boy deserves the best!
